The Change Manager ensures that all changes are managed in a controlled manner, including standard changes and emergency maintenance relating to business processes, applications, and infrastructure. This includes change standards and procedures, impact assessment, prioritization and authorization, emergency changes, tracking, reporting, closure, and documentation.


In addition to managing changes in our infrastructure environment, the Change manager will also be involved with release management for our client-facing applications.  This includes the monitoring of release progress through the entire pipeline, assuring quality standards are consistently met at each stage gate and coordinating releases and teams at the portfolio, program, and team levels. The Release Manager will also oversee the adherence to deployment windows and release processes by software delivery teams, facilitate the appropriate communication channels among software delivery roles and with stakeholders, and continuously improve release management practices.


Strong verbal and written communication skills are a requirement for this role.  Change Managers will be expected to facilitate with people across multiple teams, engage and interact with leadership at various levels and should be skilled in dealing with conflict, helping influence and drive people towards a goal or action.



This position requires work in support of the Company’s contract with the United States Department of Education (“ED”).  As such, the United States Government requires that any applicant for this position must complete United States Government security clearance.  Effective June 1, 2018, ED has informed Nelnet that security clearance applications for foreign nationals are not being accepted or processed.  In light of this direction from ED, Nelnet will be unable to hire applicants without United States citizenship for such positions.


  • Ensures that changes are logged, prioritized, categorized, assessed, authorized, planned, and scheduled, and are introduced in a controlled and coordinated manner.
  • Work with multiple customers, stakeholders, and system owners to coordinate, communicate and provide risk assessments on all IT changes.
  • Provide training and technical support on the change management process for users with varying levels of IT knowledge.
  • Collaborate with business and IT stakeholders to ensure smooth and reliable delivery of software and systems to fulfill business objectives, support business processes, and ensure business continuity.
  • Coordinate application migration process through non-production and production environments according to change control policies and procedures.
  • Maintain the release schedule for all core services and ensure alignment across all application needs.
  • Lead and co-ordinate the go-live activities including the execution of the deployment plans and checklists.
  • Work with project managers, development teams, and operations personnel to coordinate IT implementations and ensure established timelines are met.
  • Translate technical detail into business relevant language.
  • Analyze change records to determine any trends and provide analysis of change data and communication of that to technical groups and business stakeholders.
  • Participate in audit reviews of change management throughout the organization.
  • Work with both business and technical representatives to develop and enhance change management processes.



Bachelor's degree in Information Science or related field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.



  1. Basic knowledge of IT environments including infrastructure and software development concepts. 
  2. Strong understanding of CM methodologies and best practices (ITIL) as well as experience developing and enhancing complex processes.  ITIL v3 experience/ practitioner certification in Change Management preferable.
  3. Ideal to have prior change management or build engineer experience. 
  4. Experience working across multiple functional areas to achieve a common business purpose.
