Overview

The Risk Underwriting Supervisor will support the development, implementation, and maintenance of appropriate oversight and governance mechanisms aligned to risk objectives and regulatory risk of the Risk Management department.  Focus areas will include merchant risk review and underwriting, commercial underwriting, third party oversight, PCI/card association compliance, data protection standards, and other risk/compliance considerations as appropriate.  Additionally, the position will be responsible for identifying new and emerging areas of concern, potential market and industry risks, partnering with stakeholders to develop corresponding action plans, and driving those objectives to resolution.

 

The position provides significant contributions to the development, implementation and enforcement of risk policies, procedures, and programs designed to minimize financial, regulatory and compliance risk within the established strategies of the Risk Management department and the Company.  The position interacts with multiple levels of management in assigned areas, implementing policies and work standards to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

  1. Lead and manage team of risk analysts responsible for underwriting all new merchant applications within approved underwriting guidelines;
  2. Ensure consistency in verifying information and supporting documentation provided by merchant applicants is accurate and complete;
  3. Effectively assess information provided within personal and business credit reports to make appropriate credit decisions;
  4. Ability to read, understand and analyze financial statements, tax returns and other financial documentation provided by companies to correctly assess the financial performance and condition of merchant applicants;
  5. Make underwriting decisions or recommendations for merchant applicants that do not fall within the underwriting guidelines, when applicable;
  6. Ability to effectively communicate with merchants regarding their applications, when needed, to obtain information and documentation needed to make appropriate underwriting decisions;
  7. Provide recommendations for approvals, credit holds, conditional approvals or declines of merchant applications consistent with risk objectives;
  8. Periodically review existing companies within the merchant portfolio to ensure their continued compliance with underwriting guidelines, processing expectations, financial exposure, and overall risk standards;
  9. Communicate decisions effectively, both verbal and written, to all levels within the organization;
  10. Develop and lead a highly engaged team of analysts driven to meet and exceed Risk Management goals and corporate objectives.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or other equivalent experience and education.

 

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum 4 years of experience in related field.

  1. Previous knowledge of credit card processing industry required;
  2. Ability to effectively analyze financial statements, tax returns and other business documents;
  3. Ability to accurately read and interpret both personal and business credit reports;
  4. Excellent attention to detail;

  6. Highly effective time management and organizational skills;
  7. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills;
  8. Ability to make decisions independently and work well as part of a team;

  11. Working knowledge of Windows applications including Outlook, Excel and Word and General PC knowledge;
  12. Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities;
  13. Ability to accurately represent facts, offer solutions, identify concerns, resolve issues and support decisions;
  14. Strong interpersonal, collaboration and teamwork skills required. Ability to work with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, maintain cordial and effective relationships with coworkers, and effectively engage with other business contacts.
