  • Overview

    As a Fiber Splicer/Locator, your primary responsibility will be to correctly, safely, and efficiently locate underground fiber optic cable, as well as prepare inside and outside fiber optical cable for new splicing, re-routing, and restoration.


    This position will be located in our Ft. Morgan, Colorado office.


    1. Searching for underground fiber optics and accurately marking the location.
    2. Completing all necessary paperwork
    3. Maintaining daily contact with utility managers, crews, homeowners, and contractors discussing locate issues.
    4. Receiving daily locates via computer/device.
    5. Prioritizing your daily work by going through all locate requests to determine routing.
    6. Reading and understanding provided maps to assist in identification of underground fiber optics.
    7. Ensuring that customers and contractors suffer no damages or injuries due to mis-located fiber optics.
    8. Respond to emergency calls in a timely manner, and working periodic weekend or evening on-call rotation.
    9. Work closely with GIS personnel to insure that up to date fiber maps are accurate for system and contract personnel.
    10. Provide a safe work environment by being knowledgeable of and enforcing all state, local, federal safety regulations and company safety policies.
    11. Operate and monitor company-owned vehicle by inspecting condition daily and maintaining a valid driver’s license.
    12. Prepares inside and outside fiber optical cable for new splicing, re-routing, and restoration.
    13. Installation, maintenance and testing of aerial outside plant fiber, pole attachment and down guy installation.
    14. Use appropriate hand and power tools to properly measure, cut, bend, assemble and erect all components necessary for lifting, moving and installing plant materials in accordance with the applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards.
    15. Dismantles, moves, and removes aerial, underground or building wire, cable associated equipment and hardware.
    16. Constructs, installs, and splices in several types of splice enclosures, fiber patch panels, and fiber termination frames using a Fusion type splicer.
    17. Troubleshoots all aspects of the fiber network or individual circuits utilizing test equipment such as the OTDR, Power Meter-Light Source, Visible Light Source, and Fiber Finder.
    18. Locates underground cable and duct using cable locator.
    19. Verifies the accuracy and notates any discrepancies relating to re-entry of all existing splice enclosures.
    20. Quality control inspection of field related work performed by contractors.
    21. Accurately prepares all field reports relating to work accomplished on a daily basis.
    22. To provide a safe working environment by being knowledgeable and enforcing all state, local and company safety procedures.
    23. Operate and maintain company-owned vehicles by inspecting daily and maintaining a valid driver’s license.
    24. To alternate on a weekly basis, the on-call responsibilities relating to emergency restoration.
    25. Other duties as assigned.



    High school diploma or equivalent.



    Previous exposure to fiber optic technology.



    1. Knowledge of underground utility construction and your assigned geographic region.
    2. Basic knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word and GIS.
    3. Skills to effectively communicate with internal and external customers, contractors and company employees.
    4. Ability to walk up to 5 miles a day in all weather conditions.
    5. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to bend/stoop/kneel/crawl
    6. Flexibility and temperament to adapt to sudden challenges and changing work conditions
    7. Willingness to change schedule at short notice to respond to emergency calls.
    8. Availability for weekend on-call duty, as required
    9. Ability to pass pre-employment background check and drug screen
    10. Strong organizational and problem solving skills.
    11. Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
    12. Ability to operate a company vehicle and maintain a valid driver’s license.
